Question
Hi,
my son is 21 and has been just diagnosed with Aspergers. I was looking at www.bacb.com website to find therapists specialised in Aspergers for my son, but was unable to navigate. Can you start me off on navigating in the website in my search for a therapist? Thanks!

Answer
Good morning Paru,

The website you're looking at is a training organization that offers courses towards certification in their approach to autism spectrum disorders. The basis of their approach is applied behavior analysis.

This is ONE therapeutic approach; there are many others. Which is the most suitable approach for an individual depends on many things, such as the person's level of functioning, their current needs, their background experiences, their age, level of intellectual abilities, and family situation.

ABA is more commonly used with small children, not adults, unless the adult has a significant intellectual disability.

If you wish to search out a therapist through the site you were looking at, along the left hand column, look for the words Find/Contact Certificants and click on it. You'll be taken to a new page. Once there, near the left, click on your country and a list of names will appear.

Autism is a spectrum disorder. Some people are so affected by their autism symptoms that they require full care. About two thirds of those with autism have an intellectual disability (mental retardation). Some individuals on the autism spectrum have cognitive ability in the average to above average ranges. Different services and approaches would be more beneficial, depending where on the spectrum your son lies. If he functions at the higher end, you might want to seek out counselors familiar with a cognitive behavior therapy approach.
