Autism/27 month old grandson

Question
My 27 month old grandson is not talking as much as other kids his age.  He does say, "I want my blankee" and "Where is mommy/daddy/paw paw."  When I ask him who he played with at daycare, he NEVER answers me and even if I repeat the question, he will ignore me.  He bites occasionally and hits at us when he is disciplined.  He plays with toys, but would much rather watch a Thomas video or be read to.  Should we be concerned.

Answer
Cheryl,
Yes, you need to be concerned and your need to have your grandson assessed. I suggest that you talk over your concerns with his doctor. You medical insurance should cover the costs of having him assessed. If not, you need to contact the school he will be attending when he gets older and ask for their help. I suggest that you put your concerns, along with a request for assessment, in writing and deliver it to the principal. The school should either direct you to a government agency that will provide you with an assessment, or the school should provide it. The sooner your grandson is assessed, the sooner he can begin receiving the services he needs.
I wish you and your grandson the best,
