Autism/7 month old

Question
Hi Julia,

I have a 7 month old that I think has autism tendencies such as..does not
make much eye contact and hits his head on the floor when moving around.
He also only says mama and babbles only sometimes.  He does sit up on his
own and scoots really well and eats really well.  Oh another thing is, he
doesn't seem to care when I leave or when I come home, he also lets anyone
hold him and has no problems with that.   Another thing he doesn't give hugs
or kisses yet, should I be concerned?

Answer
Hello, Gabby!

I'm sorry for the delay on answering this question, but I rarely check the question pool.

At 7 months old, I think that his language development is fairly good; I wouldn't worry unduly about that part just yet. Give it a little time before you get concerned over his 'talking' issues.

The others, I think that there may be a possibility, but there may also just be the fact that he is 7 months old, and kids at that age tend to do odd things. He's exploring his world and sometimes that exploration tends to end up with some really odd expressions of 'fun'. Even the most typical children in the world probably had extremely weird habits at that age! So all in all, I think I would just give it time and relax a bit. Everything sounds as if it's developing fine. Just keep an eye on the head-hitting; that, you'll want to curb just so he doesn't harm himself accidentally!

Wishing you well,
Trey

Expertise

My primary expertise is in the area of the social, psychological, and mental development of Aspergers Syndrome and other high-functioning Autistic Spectrum Disorders. I am also very knowledgeable in the communication disorders and common co-existing issues. I'm well-read on most of these as well as having experienced it myself. Other aspects of autism, I can do fairly well at as well, from the oversensitivity to the recognition of it. Warning: I am *not* a medical professional, and while I can research answers through books and online, I can not give direct medical expertise.

Experience

I am 19 years diagnosed Asperger's Autistic, and have been reading up and studying it, as well as taking 'first hand accounts' for most of those 14 years. In addition, I have had three children, adopted elsewhere, all of whom are varying degrees of autistic from mid to high functioning. My mother has done some research on the subject as well, and passed some of it on to me.

Education/Credentials
I have completed grade school and most of high school, and achieved a GED. I've also received home schooling.
