Autism/Asperger's Disorder

Question
It's recently come to my attention that I may be a high-functioning autistic.  I'm a 60-year-old woman.  I would like to speak to a professional about this ... but am not sure which type of professional to see!  Would you suggest a psychiatrist or a psychologist?  From what I've been reading, I believe the latter would be better ... because I do not need to be drugged.  I really only need confirmation ... and perhaps suggestions for some helpful coping skills.  Thanks!  Nan

Answer
Hi Nan;

I agree with you! For what it is worth, working extensively with people with Asperger's I have come to view it as a cognitive style and not a disorder or syndrome. Please keep in mind that if you do receive a diagnosis there are a tremendous amount of children and young adults who desperately need the persepctive and experience you can bring to them. Let me know how it works out.
