Autism/Asperger Syndrome in adult female

Question
Hello, I am a 44 yr old female who was dx with AS in march 05. After initially being dx with ADHD in 2002 and was in 2 yrs weekly CBT which helped somewhat but I was being treated for ADHD. After one year of searching I have finally found a therapist who councels adults with AS and the ongoing social issues.  My question is do you know what treatment is available for adults with sensory and auditory processing issues.  I have major problems with both of these and this has impacted my social life greatly. I start my day at 1am when it is quieter as I am not able to handle all the noise, lights and people of the day. My brain just shuts down and I am not even able to talk on the phone after 3pm much less even go out anywhere especially to movies, restaurants or shows etc. I have asked my psychiatrist if there are any meds to treat the sensory overload and she said no.  My new therapist knows of treatment for kids but my issues are somewhat different.  I am on Medicare and SSI so my income and health benefits are very limited.  I live in Orange county, S Cal.  I look forward to any help you can offer.  Thanks

Answer
Hi Deborah;

I suggest you practice yoga and meditation. It is the best way to slow down your nervous system and induce relaxation. In meditation visualize a quiet, safe, and relaxing "special place." When your surroundings begin to over stimulate you, you can visualize your special place. In a short time, just thinking about your special place will automatically produce relaxation.

Please give it a try.

Kind Regards,
James
