Autism/add vs autism

Question
I have been told that autism and add/adhd are on the same spectrum by my son's pediatrician. I know they have similar symptoms, but are they on the same spectrum?

Answer
Hello there, James!

Unless there have been some developments in diagnosis (of which there might be; I'm not a physician and there are new discoveries being made all the time), at this present time, ADHD is not considered in the spectrum of Autistic Spectrum Disorders (or ASDs). It is, however, classed as a Developmental Disorder.

Now, as you say, they do have very similar symptoms. In addition, ADHD is commonly diagnosed in children with Asperger's and Autism, either as a comorbid condition (or occurring along with the ASD; also known as 'Dual Diagnosis' to help avoid the unpleasant word associations) or misdiagnosis. In addition, there is study on the genetics that suggest a possible link. Therefore, the link is an understandable one. However, at this time, ADHD is not classified as one of the Autistic Spectrum, and is instead separate from it through both severity and general behavioral signs.

A short, easily-digested article that brings up the possibility of the genetic link, for if you are interested.

Hopefully that answered the question,

Expertise

My primary expertise is in the area of the social, psychological, and mental development of Aspergers Syndrome and other high-functioning Autistic Spectrum Disorders. I am also very knowledgeable in the communication disorders and common co-existing issues. I'm well-read on most of these as well as having experienced it myself. Other aspects of autism, I can do fairly well at as well, from the oversensitivity to the recognition of it. Warning: I am *not* a medical professional, and while I can research answers through books and online, I can not give direct medical expertise.

Experience

I am 19 years diagnosed Asperger's Autistic, and have been reading up and studying it, as well as taking 'first hand accounts' for most of those 14 years. In addition, I have had three children, adopted elsewhere, all of whom are varying degrees of autistic from mid to high functioning. My mother has done some research on the subject as well, and passed some of it on to me.

Education/Credentials
I have completed grade school and most of high school, and achieved a GED. I've also received home schooling.
