Question
I am a preschool teacher (ages 3-5) and I suspect someone in my class is displaying some autism symptons. What do I specifically look for and how do I address the parents?

Answer
Hi Wendy;

This is always a very tough situation. First, if you live in the U.S., I suggest you refer her to the special education department in the school district in which she resides. You can tell the parent you are seeing some "social delays," and then on the referral form simply describe the behaviors you are seeing in detail. I avoid the "autism" word when ever I can because it has tremendous shock value and throws the family into terrible distress, sometimes unnecessarily.

It is good you have the knowledge to notice the behaviors, and, referring the child should get her the much needed services early when she neeeds them the most.

Kind Regards,
James
