Autism/My family is driving me crazy!

Question
My family has a hard time accepting the fact that I can take care of myself and make my own decisions. And they're also all over me like a buzzard on a gut wagon cause I don't have a job yet. They never trust me or even give me a chance to prove myself.

I've tried everything, but to no avail. What do you suggest?

Answer
Hi Dwayne;

You should look for some tapes from a man I respect very much and I'm sure you have heard of already, Dr. Tony Attwood. His web site is very helpful. If you can find a DVD about adolescent and/or adult Asperger's, you can make your family watch the DVD and/or leave you alone! It sounds like there may be a poverty of knowledge about this topic on your family's part. This presumes you haven't had any significant difficulty with independent functioning? If you have, what were the issues?

Regards,
james
