Autism/losing speech.
Expert: James Michael Roan - 6/4/2006
QuestionWhat I meant by her not knowing me as mommy was that if you say to her "Where's Mommy?" she doesn't look for me, or if you say "Mommy's comming." she doesn't get excited until she see's me. It's like she doesn't understand, that's also what I meant by her not knowing cup as cup. I did want to thank you for taking the time to answer my question.

Hello. I am concerned about my 13 month old daughter. I have an older child with Aspergers so I am somewhat aware of signs of autism. My daughter is currently doing PT weekly due to a 35% delay in gross motor. At 13 months she doesn't crawl, she bottom scoots, & has low muscle tone. She also recieved weekly OT due to sensory issues. She headbangs almost constantly, mild hairpulling, & has recently started to bite her wrists. And lastly she has speech weekly. She has a 50% delay in this area. She doesn't point to indicate needs, doesn't imitate games like Itsy Bitsy Spider, or show toys. She doesn't know me as Mommy just by sight, doesn't know cup is a cup. And up until a couple weeks ago the only word she would say over & over was Daddy. Well, now she can say uck for yuck, hi, apple when prompted, and I think when she says goo goo she is trying to say good girl. However she hasn't said Daddy in almost 2 weeks. It's like she forgot. Even when prompted she won't/can't say it. Does it sound like she has lost it or is just interested in her new words which by the way she doesn't say those very often either. Otherwise she has good eye contact, prefers to play alone but will play with kids, & she is very loving. Should I have to looked at by a Neuro? Thanks!
AnswerYou are welcome.
The mommy piece sounds more like a language problem. Stay close to her social interest/development. Simon Baron-Cohen is the lead researcher in social development. He has a few books out and tons of research.
