Question
Hi...I have a three year old autistic daughter who constantly flicks her fingers in front of her eyes and licks her hand (hand-mouthing)...I've tried many ways to decrease this behavior but nothing seems to work.I know that it more sensory however any suggestion you may have would be very helpful...Due to the constant licking she often gets sick and it also interfers with her focus in learning....

Answer
Stimming behaviors are extremely hard to control!  The hand licking is a tough one. Try putting hand sanitizer on her hands after she licks them. If she doesn't like the taste of it, it may stop her or at least slow it down some. Of course there is the possiblity that she will not mind the taste!  Often, you can just distract a behavior and try to replace it with another that is more appropriate. There are many sensory tools that you can use. Something to chew on like a teething ring may help. There is a catalog called Abilitations that has a lot of great things you can use. I am sorry I do not have a number for them.  You may be able to find a website for them by putting the name of the catalog in for a search.  If I find some more information that may be useful to you, I will certainly pass it on. Good Luck.  I hope this answer has helped you a little. Please let me know if you find something that helps. I would like to know how she is doing. Thanks. And, feel free to ask me anyting...anytime.  ~Denise
