Okay, so first.. I'm basically clueless when it comes to heating and air for cars or anything for that matter, so i bought a can of R-134a refrigerant, and looked at the instructions and all that stuff.  anyways, turns out I have to have my "Compressor clutch engaged before I can add refrigerant? sooo im completely lost now, because I have no clue how to do that, any pointers?

If your system has no pressure the compressor will not turn on.  Check if you have pressure and/or just add a can as it goes in the compressor will start cycling ( turning on and off).  If you have pressure you may have a different problem try and have it checked if not sure.  You can get hurt.
