Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair - Freon

Expert: Tom Joy - 9/29/2004

Question
Which freon is required in a 1997 Toyota Rav4? The information sticker is missing and the air conditioner needs recharging but im not sure of the proper freon.

Thank you

Answer
Take a look at the fittings where the A/C hoses attached from the test unit. If they are small and have exterior threads on them then it is an R-12 system.

If the 2 fittings are large and do NOT have exterior threads on them then it is an R-134a system.

If you ca e-mail pictures send them to me at:

meperganfortis@msn.com

and I will tell you which you have.

I am pretty sure that you have the R-134a system.

You could call any auto parts store and ask if they have cans of freon for your 1997 Toyota Rav4 and they will be able to tell you which freon it uses.
