Question
The rear passenger window on my son's 528i dropped last night and I was curious if this is something we can address ourselves or do I need to take it to a dealership. It is a 1998.

Answer
Hello Russ,

Unless you or your son has at least some previous experience working on power windows, I suggest you find someone to handle the job for you.  Any auto mechanic or glass shop that is familiar with this vintage of BWM should be able to make the replacement in about an hour.  I always recommend that you check with BBB to find the shops that are rated A+ and speak with two or three of them about your problem.

You do not have to get this part (cable window regulator) from BMW.  Your local Autozone, Carquest, O'Reillys, etc. should be able to get you one made by Dorman for about $110.  The Dorman part number is 740-417.

I am interested in answering questions regarding power window problems. Most typically those inquires will involve problems with window regulators, window motors, and window switches.

Experience

I have been repairing window problems full time for over seven years. I have repaired most all types of problems in the majority of domestic and import vehicles newer than 1988.
