Question
i bought a 2001 ford explorer sport 2dr and when i bought the vehicle the double switch for the windows on the driver door was busted the passenger side window switch is still intact. but neither one works the only way to get the window up is to take the door panels off and jump it to get the window up and down with a 12v source the fuses are good but its also doing it with my door lock switches so could it be a wiring issue?

-thanks

Answer
Hi Shane,

A wiring problem of some kind probably explains your situation.

The best solution is to use a 12V test light or an electrical meter to see what is happening at the master window switch.  First, you should check to see that you have power coming into the switch (blue wire).  If you don't have any power coming into the switch, you probably have a broken wire(s) between the driver door and the body of the car.  Look in the area of the door hinges and you will see a rubber boot that protects these wires.

If you do have power coming into the switch, check to see that the switches put out power on both of the two wires that lead from each of the window switches. It is very unlikely that both of these switches are bad, but it is possible.  A Dorman switch number 901-307 will replace these switches for a lot less than Ford charges.

If you don't have 12V test light or an electrical meter you should find a mechanic who does a reasonable amount of electrical work.  Ask your local auto parts store who they recommend.

Feel free to send a follow up question if I can help in any other way.
