Question
I have a 1992 GMC C1500 truck. While the regulator and the motor are in great condition, the window glass lift plate/channel at the bottom is completely rusted away. My question is how is the plate attached to the window glass and what is the best/safest method of removing the old plate?

Answer
Hello Mike,

I haven't dealt with this problem very often, so if your not completely satisfied with my answer your might want to follow up with an expert who does strictly auto glass replacement.

Most of the glass lift channels I have encountered are "pressed" on at the factory.  There is typically a cork or rubber "insulator" that serves as a cushion between the metal lift channel and the bottom edge of the glass.  If the lift channel and insulator are still available from GM, you can install the new parts by removing the glass, turning it upside down, cushioning the top edge and installing the new parts using a rubber mallet.

You might find it a lot easier to get a new piece of glass.  It will most likely come with the lift channel already pressed in place.  You might even find a salvaged glass with a good channel.
