Auto Insurance Claims/parking lot ding

Question
We are in Missouri.  This a.m. my son was pulling into a parking lot when the student next to him opened his car door.  No info exchanged, both said everything okay.  However, this evening my son was called,  the boys father filed a hit and run report (he is a police officer).   He claims small ding on door.  There are a couple of witnesses.  But they are requesting all personal info and insurance. Who is at fault (0 miles per hour, no injury)?

Answer
Hi Billie,
Generally, parking lot accidents are a bear to handle, but, in this case your son has witnesses which should make everything much simpler.
Make a report to your own insurance company and provide the names and telephone numbers of the witnesses.
The student that opened his door without checking for another car entering the next parking slot should be considered 100% at fault, but his company will battle for a 50/50 split.
The damage sounds very minor.  In MOST states, if your insurance pays out under $500-$750 on a claim it has no effect on your sons safe driving discount and causes no rate increase.
I hope this has been of help.
Your feedback by rating my answer will be appreciated.
