Auto Insurance Claims/inspecting our car

Question
We have a 2007 Toyota Corolla, 18000 mi. that was hit in the rear door area and the wheel was broken off.  We received the insurance estimate and it indicates they will use quality recycled parts.  Our agent says this is standard procedure, and that the parts are high quality and guarenteed.  Is this true?  How do we inspect the car before giving them the insurance check?  Are we allowed to take it to our mechanic before we pay for it?  Any help you can give before we pick up the car may save trouble afterwards, thank you very much.

Answer
Hi David,
If your own insurance company is paying for the repairs to your car, there is probably a clause in your policy that allows them to use recycled parts.  As long as your policy stipulates that they guarantee these parts for as long as you own the car, then there is probably no problem.  You and your mechanic can inspect the car at the shop before taking delivery and if repairs were not done properly,
in most states you have the legal right to reject the repair and not take delivery of the car.
If you take delivery and later discover improper repair, the battle would be between you and your insurance company.
Sometimes, certain areas of damage require mechanical repair.  If mechanical damage is repaired using non original manufacturer equipment, that is sufficient to void your warranty with Toyota.
You should take a copy of the repair estimate to your Toyota dealer and have it reviewed to see if the repairs they are proposing will void your warranty.
If you are collecting directly from the insurance company of the party that hit you, you have the right to demand that all repairs be done with original manufacturer parts since your car is only one year old and still under warranty.
I hope this information has been of help.
Your feedback by rating my answer will be appreciated.
Sincerely,
