Auto Insurance Claims/Will comp claim increase premium?

Question
While on a recent trip, a truck threw up some debris that caused damage to our right front fender.  Estimate to repair is $240.  I have $100 deductible.  First, is this a claim under the Comprehensive portion of my insurance?  My agent is suggesting I not file a claim, but I thought claims under Comp would not affect the premium.  What say you?
Thanks

Answer
Hi George,
Comprehensive covers a multitude of different type losses including
'falling objects'.  Since the debris that hit your truck was airborne at the time, the majority of insurance companies would consider this as a falling object and provide coverage under comprehensive.

Normally, a company does not ever increase your rate for a comprehensive claim and only increases your premium for a fault collision if the damages exceed a base amount which varies, but I have never seen a base amount under $500.

I do recall reading the posts and learning that a couple of insurance companies will increase your rate any time that you file a claim.  I don't recall the names of the companies, but they were small ones that I had never heard of before.

I find it strange that your agent is discouraging you against filing a claim.  Perhaps your company will increase your rate for any claim filed.

My suggestion is that you have another talk with your agent and get a more detailed reason for his opinion and ask if this would increase your rate (extremely unlikely, but possible).

I hope you find this information to be of help.  Please write again if you feel that I can provide more assistance.
Your feedback by rating my answer will be appreciated.
