Auto Insurance Claims/UM / UIM coverage

Question
I am seeking to upgrade my auto policy in Kentucky.  I have uninsured/underinsured limits of $50k/$100k.  I have good health insurance through my wife's employer.  If I have solid health insurance, are these reasonable limits for typical drivers?  Is is difficult to collect on UM/UIM claims?  Any comments are appreciated.  I have not been in an accident, I am just wanting to be properly covered without breaking the bank premium-wise.  Thank you.

Answer
Well, your question is somewhat difficult because you are asking me to really forecast your chances of being in a “bad” accident. $50K/$100K is a double limit, meaning that every single person in your vehicle would be covered at $50K. If there are two people on the vehicle, the each would get a maximum of $50K (or $100K combiened). A third person would be covered, by they would have to decrease the limits of the first two.

The question really is, if 50K enough to covered in the event of an uninsured car accident. The answer is it depends on YOUR financial condition. If you have a business were income comes to you without having to work (rents, savings, business, etc.), then maybe you can be out of work for months without feeling a pinch in your life style. If you do not, then is 50K enough to compensate while you are down and pay for medical bills?

The answer is up to you, but do know that medical bills add up quickly. Your insurance policy might not cover all the bills plus might not cover 100% of your wage loss. The best thin you can do is to read your policy carefully and see really, how much coverage do you have?

Also, do not simply look at one carrier. You might be surprise to get the greater coverage for the same amount from another carrier. Or the same coverage for substantially less. Five minutes can save you a lot of money for better coverage. Consider filling out a quote from this site before you commit to one specific carrier.
