Auto Insurance Claims/Titleing

Question
I traded cars with someone and when we were filling out the title the seller filled in the application for certificate of title and we were told [ us the buyer ] were suppose to fill that out. We filled in the spot that says Assignment of ownership & So fourth. We have a bill of sale from the seller and it has been notarized. So to get the title transfered to our name do we have to have the seller request a new title or can we since we do have a bill of sale and our name is on the title just in the incorrect spot? BTW its an Ohio title and we would be transferring to our state West Virginia.

Sorry I know this doesn't really go with your category.

Answer
I'm not sure I followed all that, but it sounds like the title was filled out incorrectly when the seller transferred to you.  If that is the case, the seller will probably have to request a new title and then fill it out again.

In any case, in order to put the vehicle in your name, you need to bring the transferred title to your state (WV)  department of motor vehicles and they will make it official.  So you may want to try crossing out the error and correcting it, with both seller/buyer initials next to all corrections, and then bringing it to the WV DMV to see if they will accept it.  Some will and and some won't.  Or you could call them first to see if they will accept the corrections.
