Auto Insurance Claims/Transition from personal lines claims to auto general liability claims

Question
I have over 20 years experience handling personal lines bodily injury claims with an emphasis on claims involving litigation, complex coverage issues and/or reserves requiring reporting to home office for expense and/or settlement authority.

I'm scheduled to interview for an auto general liability bodily injury claims position at another company. I hold  CPCU and Casualty Claims Law designations so I'm familiar with the ISO policy forms for GL. My question is what are the major differences between the two positions? How can I prepare for the interview?

Thanks.

Answer
Hi Maurice,

With your described back-ground you should not have any problems. There are no significant differences in handling claims. You still investigate facts, coverage and liability. Make determinations accordingly. Negotiate and settle claims. If you will now be handling auto liability as opposed to general liability, the biggest difference will be the people you deal with. It will be different dealing with general auto owners as opposed to business people. Your background would indicate a good working knowledge of insurance practices, claims handling and policy language. However, your greatest asset will be your people skills. The more you can show empathy while still remaining fair but firm in your decisions will help you succeed.

Good luck.

I hope this helps
