Auto Insurance Claims/damage to parked car

Question
We live in DC and have GEICO car insurance.  When we came out to the car (legally parked in the street) yesterday, we noticed that someone had hit our car, causing a hole above the front tire (so damaging that panel), and scrapes on the adjoining bumper.  Do we make a claim to insurance or will this raise our rates?  This is a new car, and I'm sure repairs will be 1-2K.  We have full coverage (collision, uninsured, etc.)  Thanks!

Answer
Hi Heather,
Since your car was hit while legally parked and unattended, this should be considered a non fault incident.
You will need to make a report to your insurance company.  Since you
do not know the identity of the party that hit your car, leaving GEICO with no 3rd party from which to recover, you will be required to pay your deductible and GEICO will pay for the balance of the repairs.

I am not aware of any company that would increase your rate due to a non fault accident but since laws and the legal wording of an insurance policy varies in different Jurisdictions you should discuss that issue with your agent.

I hope that you find this information useful.  Your feedback by rating my response will be appreciated.
Sincerely
Bennie
