Auto Insurance Claims/hit and run driver

Question
Hi Ron, I was involved with a hit and run.  The other driver was driving with a
Mexico license and an invalid insurance.  The police caught up with her and
arrested her at the time.  My car damaged totaled $5k and even though I
have a uninsured motorist on my insurance policy, my insurance company
(AAA) claims that I still must pay my $1K deductible?  This does not seem
right as I have an uninsured motorist feature on my policy! Does this sound
right to you?

Answer
Hello Panida,

They are apparently giving coverage under the collision part of your policy. Get a written letter from AAA why they are not covering under the UMPD and ask them to include where the policy does not cover this. They are supposed to cover under UMPD if you can identify the uninsured car, which it sounds like you did. Perhaps they will pay you back the deductible after they get the money from the other driver? Is your car a total loss, or repairable?

You can request me for a follow-up question on this after you get more info.
