Question
On 6/1/09 I was in an accident involving a deer.  After contacting the proper authorities and my Insurance, I was first informed by the adjust their estimate was at 70% of the vehical and seemed to be very pushy on getting the title to my vehical that same day and then them cut a check for the total amount of my 2002 Honda CR-V.  After a couple days I was then informed by the adjuster that I could also opt for the salvage amount which would be enough to cover the cost of the repairs plus alittle extra. My agent also informed me that after the vehical is fixed, I can still carry full coverage if I wish, but I will still have to go to the DMV to get the title changed to a salvage title.  Plus, she also informed me that even if I still carry full coverage and if I am in another accident, there would be very little pay out.  My question is: do I need to have my title changed to a salvage/rebuildable title and even at that does that effect any accident claims in the future if I have one or can I still keep my title the same?

Answer
Hello Scott,

If your car is a total loss, then you can opt to keep the salvage or to "turn" your car in to the insurance company. If you choose to keep the vehicle, then the title will be salvaged (stamped). This WILL affect later claims on this one vehicle.

There is not really much of a choice here other than not keeping your car at all. But if you keep it, then you have to also get a salvage title.

Some states would allow you to fix it (significant expense to show the car is safe) and then present it to your local DMV for inspection. After showing that the car is back to pre accident condition, the salvage title will be removed. However, this will always be in the history of the vehicle and carfax will most likely pick it up. Note, insurance companies are not require to give you back the car and a good title. It is an unfair situation but that is how it stands.
