Hello,

In the profile section, Mr Barone lists his expertise as being able to answer questions involving auto damage claims, collision repair, forensics, industry practices and diminished value claims.  I have read many excellent answers from him, but he really should shy away from questions

such as insurance law and the legal wording of insurance policies.

The answer provided above is totally inaccurate.

One of the basic tenants of all types of insurance (Life, Home, Health and Auto) is that the purchaser must have an insurable interest in the person or property being insured.

In the front part of the legal wording of an auto

insurance policy is a section called "definitions used throughout this policy". there are usually about 12 definitions and one of them states

"your insured car" means: (a) any CAR described

in the DECLARATIONS owned or leased by YOU.....

  A person can't insure a car that he doesn't

own.

The second part of his answer suggesting the car be left on the policy poses a tremendous risk to the questioner.  A person who is a new driver to our country can be expected to have more problems during the first 3-5 years of driving her than someone that grew up here and has been thinking about and watching drivers all his life.

If the relative is put on the questioners policy and has a serious fault accident that exceeds policy limits, then the owner would be financially responsible for the balance which could cause him to lose his home and all his savings.  If the relative has several traffic tickets or an accident during the first three years, the odds are that the entire policy would be canceled, which would be a severe blow to the insured.

Mr Barone should stick to answering questions in his field of expertise and pass this type on to someone who is better qualified.
