Auto Insurance Claims/Hydro-Locking

Question
I was unfortunate to experience hydro-locking on my 02 Corvette in the state of Florida. After having the car towed to our local Chevy dealer I was told my motor was totaled and that all my insurance company would do is cover me for a used motor of the same year and less mileage, The dealer has found one with only 6K which is less than what was on mine. This motor also comes with a 1 year warranty. Do I have any other options such as demanding they give me a new crate motor with zero miles or am I stuck with the used motor?

Answer
Hi Tom,

Unfortunately, you have no choice. Florida law allows the insurance company to specify used or aftermarket parts be used after 1 model year of age or 12,000 miles. Of course you could have the new motor put in and pay the difference in cost. The salvage motor should be fine. You should ask for paperwork proving the donor vehicle's mileage as well as the 1 year warrantee in writing.

I hope this helps
