Auto Insurance Claims/car accident/brake malfunction

Question
I was car accident where my brakes failed to engage while I was in cruise control.  My car was totaled and I hit another vehicle with minimal damage to their car and persons.
I reported the claim on site and an adjuster deemed my car as a total 1 1/2 weeks after my accident.  When I mentioned the brake failure again to the adjuster he gave me the number to Toyota's recall line.  After explaining the incident to Toyota, they opened a case and asked me what I wanted (a new car...etc.)  I was reluctant to answer because I didn't know the proper procedure.  Shouldn't Geico have investigated my brake failure claim directly with Toyota?  Whats the proper procedure?  I'm confused and don't know what to do.

Answer
Hi Kiona,

You can go either way. However do not give your car to toyota until that provide to you in writing that they are accepting your claim and will provide you with a certain amount of money or a replacement vehicle. If you decide to stay with your insurance company, just call them back abnd tell them to handle the claim and then they can get their money back from Toyota.

I hope this helps
