Auto Insurance Claims/How to claim aftermarket parts?

Question
My vehicle was totaled by another party, is their insurance company required to pay me for the the extra parts I have for the car but are not on the car? If so, do I have to show a receipt?

Answer
Hi Daniel,

Yes. The other company is responsible for paying for the aftermarket parts to the extent that they increase the value of the vehicle. Any reimbursement will not be on a dollar for dollar basis. It will be a depreciated amount based on when the part was installed. You will have to provide receipts to prove what the part cost and when it was installed. Some aftermarket items do not increase the value of the vehicle. For instance a set of locking lugs for the wheels may cost $65.00 but they do not actually add value, etc.

I hope this helps
