Auto Insurance Claims/To claim, or not to claim...

Question
I had my first motorcycle accident last week.  I was the only vehicle involved, there was no damage besides that incurred to my bike and gear. This was an unfortunate case of my over responding to a car that braked quickly, where I overcompensated with my front brake, causing the front wheel to lock up and the back of the bike to slide forward, sliding the bike and me down the street.

I've had my motorcycle license since 2001 with no incidents.  This is my second bike, a 2004 BMW R1150R, and I've never made a claim on it or my previous bike.  My dilemma is whether I should make a claim to my my insurance provider (American Family with a $500 deductible) or whether I'm better off just paying for the repairs myself (estimated at $1,100).  My rates for this bike are high already, since it is classified as a sport bike, and I'm afraid that the benefit of the insurance payment ($600) may not be worth it.

Is there some way to predict how much my insurance will go up?  I'm in the state of Wisconsin.  I've heard that if I call just to inquire with the insurance company that they may log the accident.

Thanks.

Answer
Hi Ellen,

Since the insurance would only pay about $600.00, I would say you would be better off to pay it your self. The increase in premium would be for the next 3 years and would likely be more that the $600.00.

One way to find out with out letting them know it to call the company and pose as someone seeking a quote on motorcycle insurance. Use a fake name but give otherwise accurate info as to your age, bike info and the at-fault accident info just to see the rate they quote you. Then you will know for sure what your best course of action should be.

I hope this helps
