Auto Insurance Claims/Drove car through high water

Question
I drove my 2009 Nissan Sentra through a deep puddle and the engine and electricity failed in my car. It was late at night and pouring rain. I've contacted Geico (Georgia) to file a claim. The Nissan dealer suspects a new engine and some minor electrical work will repair the car. I have full coverage (both comp. and collision). I've read that most "flood" cars often have problems down the road. Will Geico salvage out the car, or do some sub-standard repairs and report the flood information to Carfax? I trust they'll repair the car, at the least, but I don't want problems down the road. Please help!

Answer
Hi Robert,

The car will only be totaled if the cost of repairs exceeds 70% of the value of the car. Even that is not a hard figure. They legally can repair the car up to 100% of its value.

Flood damage is especially problematic. If water got inside the cabin of the vehicle it will not be possible to eliminate all potential future problems. Do not take your vehicle to a shop recommended by your insurance company. You should research and select a repair shop of your own choosing.

You will be entitled to compensation for the diminished value of your car. No one wil pay full price for a car that is known to have been flooded. Collecting diminished value can help recoup some of your future losses.

I hope this helps
