Auto Insurance Claims/Car hit in accident has no coverage

Question
My car was hit by another driver while being repaired. At the time it had no coverage. There was a police report made and the claims were sent to the insurance carrier of the driver who hit my vehicle as well as the insurance carrier that I previously used. The drivers carrier came out to inspect my vehicle for damages and they declared it "totaled". Will I still be entitled to the costs estimated by his acrrier even though my car is not covered right now.

Answer

Hi Schvonne,

Yes, you WILL be entitled to compensation for damage to your property by the fault of another person, even if your car was not insured at the time.  It is THE OTHER DRIVER'S INSURANCE that will pay.

NOW, here is the tough part:
1. how do you value a car?
2. do you really want your car "totaled", or would you agree to have it repaired with used non-"OEM" parts?

You can get some head start free information on these topics by going to my website and reading up on how to go about getting good value for your car, AND on whether or not you have the opportunity to retain the car, versus having to go out and buy replacement transportation.
