Question
Does auto liability insurance follow the car or the driver?
Tennessee is the state.  Also the owner was a passenger, and the driver was a learner (with a permit) and with permission--being taught by owner/passenger.

Answer
Dear Reta,

Your policy on the car insures drivers who are driving with your permission, such as this learner.  Thus, your car, the driver, and you (as a passenger) are all insured.

Let's say that the learner caused an accident.  The insurance will pick up repairs under your collision coverage, less your deductible.

Then, both the learner and you are covered for your medical costs via PIP or no-fault medpay.

If you suffered injuries, then you can make a claim on your own policy versus the driver for liability.  You will be entitled to everything just the same as if you were making a claim versus some third party tortfeasor. [Assuming of course that your instruction itself was not the cause of the accident :-)]
