Auto Insurance Claims/Police Reports and No Fault Insurace

Question
Good Afternoon Sir,

I was involved in an accident where I lost control of my vehicle and crashed into an embankment. There was no damage to any property other than my vehicle and myself.

The police arrived on the scene when my car was being towed away. It was my first accident and out of fear I told the police I was not the driver but rather the passenger and that the driver had left the scene. The police gave me a report number to give to my insurance company when I filed my claim.

Shortly after I went to the ER to have stitches to mend a gash on my chin. At the ER I stated I was the driver of the vehicle in an accident and gave them my car and medical insurance information and they then provided treatment.

My medical insurance will now not pay for the medical because my no fault car insurance must be billed first. I am afraid to complete the claim with my car insurance because they may have a copy of the police report that indicates something other than what is on the medical report which was sent to them by the hospital. I do not know if the have a copy of the police report or even if they would have requested it.

Does the insurance company typically request a police report for an incident like this, should I assume they have it?

I am thinking of just paying the medical bills myself and just instructing the insurance to close the file because there will be no clam. I’m not sure what to do. My insurance company is GEICO and the events took place in Honolulu, HI 9 months ago. The police have made no attempt to contact me.

Thank you for your time.

Regards

Answer
Hi Charles,

You are DARN LUCKY you have not been caught.  That is a crime you committed, and the best thing you can do is to pay the medical costs and "go forward and sin no more, my son."

Yes, your insurance surely WILL ALWAYS get a copy of the police report if there is a no-fault medical claim to be paid.

Best wishes,
