Question
What would cause the shifter to pop out of fourth gear when I accelerate?

Answer
There is probably a weak or broken mount (could be trans or engine, they're kind of all necessary since the engine and transmission are bolted in as one unit).  When you accelerate, the engine reacts to the torque and rotates in its cradle.  If the mount is broken, it moves further and pulls on the shifter linkage, which pulls it out of gear.  Have someone give the mounts a good going over and replace the broken ones.  Also check the shifter cable and the bracket it attaches to, in case they are bent or cracked.
