Question
I ran an ad on Craigslist needing a 2.2 Engine for a 97 Pontiac Sunfire ; a man responded saying he has a 2.2 from a 98 Chevy Cavalier ..... Are they the same engine ? ... Is there any other Cars or years that are also the same engine ?

Answer
Yes, they are the same engine.  There might be differences in sensors and how they're mounted, but those should be easy to deal with, just keep the old motor until the job is done in case anything's missing or different.  Also keep all of the bracketry and engine mounts handy in case they're different.  And don't buy an engine if you can't hear it run first, there's no way to tell what you're getting and I'm certain there's no warranty in a deal like this.
