Question
I have a 1979 Triumph Spitfire that need a lot of repair mechanical and body.
The motor in the car however is not the original motor, how do i find out what
year the motor is? I have all the numbers off of the block but don't know who
can tell me exactly what year this engine is. Any guidance would be great.

Answer
I would start straight away with Moss Motors.  You are going to need them if you intend to restore the car, anyway.  They have all the parts and all the info you will need.  Spitfires only used one engine, although emissions regs caused them to be fitted with a number of different carburetors and ignition systems over the years.
