Question
the key wont turn on,in my 2002 grand am. it is in park but the steering wheel is not locked

Answer
If you are saying that the key won't turn in the lock, but the steering wheel turns freely, then the lock cylinder is probably damaged and will probably have to be replaced.  You might want to take that to a pro, as the wheel has to come off, which means fooling with the airbag (which is, technically, an explosive device).
If you are saying that the key turns, but the car doesn't turn on, then it is probably the switch.  The switch is a separate part, located beneath the steering column.  There is a rod that connects the switch to the lock cylinder, and that may be damaged but it is unlikely.
