Auto Parts/Open Door Indicator

Question
Hi Evans,
On my '07 Honda Accord, even when the door is closed, the indicator on the dashboard still shows like the passenger door (drivers' side) is still open.
What could be wrong here and what do I do?

Answer
There is a sensor that detects if the door is open.  They used to use the same switch that also turned on the dome light.  Most cars nowadays have a switch built into the actual door latch that turns that light on and off.  One time, I had a floor mat work its way under the edge of the door.  The door was closed and latched, but just enough not so that the light came on.  You should fiddle with the door, making sure that there are no obstructions around the edge, and I would lubricate the latch with a little WD-40 or the like.  If it is still acting up, then the switch is probably bad.  This should be under warranty, I would think.  The dealer is the only place you can buy the part, anyway.  It would be helpful to pitch a fit about this thing going bad on a "practically new car."  In the warranty department, the squeeky wheel gets the grease.
