Question
i am wanting to replace the stock gears in my 1985 monte carlo ls with a 305. i need to know the carrier series in order to do so unless i can get a gear that will fit either 7.5 or 7 5/8 thanks

Answer

7.5
The easiest way to tell the size of the carrier is by the shape of the gasket.  In 1985 the Monte Carlo used either a 7.5 or a 8.5 ring gear.  Most V8s and all SS models had the larger one.  Most V6s had the smaller.  But the only sure-fire way to tell is to look at the rear.  I will enclose a picture of the 7.5 gasket.  AllExperts won't let me send more than one photo.  The 8.5 is similar, but is almost circular instead of almost rectangular.  Hope this does it for you.
