Question
My catalytic converter (CC) was replaced January 2008 @ 96K miles. Now my mileage is 122K.

The check engine light diagnostic PO420 Code shows the van needs a new CC again (per my TirePlus mechanic who replaced it over 2 years ago with Honda OEM. Parts & labor total $ 1400!)

What is the warranty on the replacement CC?  Thank you.

Answer
Federal law requires a warranty on replacement converters of 25,000 miles.  Your mileage is a little too conveniently slightly over this figure.  I would want to get a qualified mechanic to verify that the converter is not functioning.  Reading the code from the converter is not the best way to confirm this.  Most big exhaust shops have a device that lets them read the gas contents of the exhaust before and after the converter.  This gives a sure-fire confirmation of the diagnosis.  As long as you don't live in California you can replace the existing unit with one from Eastern in Philly.  It carries a 50,000 mile warranty and can be ordered from one of your local parts suppliers for around $200.  I have sold many of these and always had good luck dealing with this company.
