Question
what is the proper seting for the point gap to get car started

Answer
The setting is different for each make of distributor.  However, if you just want to get it going, .018" will almost always work.  You should find out the correct setting and use that, if you can.  I always set the gap on my old Chevy six with a matchbook cover; it worked every time.
