Question
will a 3.4 out of a 1996 pontiac montana fit in a 2001 grand am with a 3.4

Answer
Yes, but you'll have to swap a lot of the 96 parts for the 2001 parts.  I'm not sure it's something I'd want to do unless I had good manuals/diagrams and was dead certain of the quality of the replacement engine (at the very least I'd want to hear it run, and I'd like to be able to drive it).  It is neither difficult or expensive to get a rebuilt 3.4 to swap in.  It would give me much more confidence.
