Question
I am a 20 year old college student in michigan, and I wanted to get involved in car racing.  I would like to it more for a hobby than professional.  Where would I start?  Is a driving school a good option?

Answer
HI Amber:

I'm glad to help where I can. The biggest amateur orgnaization in the US is the Sports Car Club of America, or SCCA. For complete info on local branches, go to >>www.scca.org.<< and look for your local region. We are about 70,000 members nationwide and have all kinds of opportunities for both drivers and non drivers alike. Many or our present drivers started as volunteer workers, working flags or fire crew, communications and so forth.
AND we have drivers schools usually twice a year in our regions.

I would suggest you get in touch with them right away, and find your local region, join the club, attend a few meetings and races, meet other members, and get a feel for what's going on.

I think that answers your questions for now, but I'd be most happy to answer more if you feel the need.

Good luck!!

Experience

I have been racing for 20 years, I have been the Central Florida SCCA Regional Championship points for 5 years running, and won the championship in my class 2 times. During my first start in the 60's I won many solo awards and the State Championship Drags. I serve as a senior instructor for SCCA, and have taught in Mercedes AMG events at Daytona, and Dodge Viper Days at Sebring International. I have been in the thick of the competition for all of my career. At one time or another I have driven race cars at speeds nearing 195 MPH. It's quite a ride !
