Question
Hi Dan, Would you have any suggestions re : 1991 Honda Accord ? I'm racing in a novice class 3/8 asphalt oval.
I hit the rev limiter 3/4 down the track in second gear, but in third it bogs.
I tried different tire sizes etc with no luck. I need to gain about 800 rpm ( a guess )   Is there a way to bypass the rev limiter ?, or changing a gear in the tranny, or would  you know if there is a bolt on 4 speed for that car?       thanks

Answer
Hi Eric- - -sounds like you need either a higher or a lower differential gear, so you can either stretch second a little further, or go to third and have some torque.

Changing chips is something about which I know very little. You should try to find a local tune up shop ask their opinion. You can also look in magazines like "Sport Compact" for information on chips

And as far as after market transmissions go, I'm sure they are available , probably from Honda themselves, but be prepared to spend upwards of $2000 for one.  Since they are a low volume item they're going to be expensive.

Finally, I'm a Datsun/Nissan person and find a wealth of information and custom racing parts available from Nissan Competition. I'm sure with Honda's involvement in 3 forms of professional racing ,probably more, that they have a competition arm as well. You will have to search it out and contact them. When you do you'll find that your wallet is your only limit !

Good luck on the ovals, hope you make Daytona someday- - -I have and it's awesome

Experience

I have been racing for 20 years, I have been the Central Florida SCCA Regional Championship points for 5 years running, and won the championship in my class 2 times. During my first start in the 60's I won many solo awards and the State Championship Drags. I serve as a senior instructor for SCCA, and have taught in Mercedes AMG events at Daytona, and Dodge Viper Days at Sebring International. I have been in the thick of the competition for all of my career. At one time or another I have driven race cars at speeds nearing 195 MPH. It's quite a ride !
