Question
On a SBC, if i wish to increse my oil pressure by 10 lbs, how thick of a shim must i put on the spring in the oil pump?

Answer
You will have to experiment- - - in my engines I use #10 flat washers. Each one is good for about  10 Lb. at speed- - -say 5000 RPM.

Most importantly, I begin to lose count around 6 or 7 spark plugs, you might better direct your question to Randy Cooper , a pro V-8 builder I know out west. His e-mail is:

He may be able to give you a more direct answer.

Your oil pressure at speed, max RPM , should be 10 PSI per 1000 RPM.  So at 7000 RPM you should have 70 PSI oil pressure. More is costing you horsepower, less risks engine damage. Be sure to use a synthetic oil. I like Amzoil, Valvoline, and Castrol Syntec, and I do NOT like Mobil One- - - it doesn't seem to hold up well in heat.

Good luck

Experience

I have been racing for 20 years, I have been the Central Florida SCCA Regional Championship points for 5 years running, and won the championship in my class 2 times. During my first start in the 60's I won many solo awards and the State Championship Drags. I serve as a senior instructor for SCCA, and have taught in Mercedes AMG events at Daytona, and Dodge Viper Days at Sebring International. I have been in the thick of the competition for all of my career. At one time or another I have driven race cars at speeds nearing 195 MPH. It's quite a ride !
