Auto Racing/four cylinder front wheel drive car

Question
Dan,

I am just looking to get started in racing. I grew up watching the four bangers and really want to get out there. The track I am looking into since I am moving has a stock four cylinder front wheel drive class. I am just wondering what a few good vehicle choices would be. I am not too concerned about not doing well, I know the learning curve is going to be long. I just want something inexpensive and fun. I am in the military so my budget is slim.

Thanks,

Don

Answer
Hi Don:

The Dodge Neons seem to be popular. and if imports ara allowed, I'd probably stay with Toyota or Saturn  (Saturn is billed as a US made car, but underneath it SCREAMS Toyota) Honda's are quick but some are a pain to work on.  There are Ford Focus models that are wicked fast too.

The smart guys check on the prices of parts with dealers and other sources before starting with a brand. I can overhaul one of my Datsun engines for about $600.00 if I do all the work,  The same job on a BMW runs three times that amount. Also check what kind of discount deal they will give you for racing their brand.  Don't stop with one dealer either, some are anxious to promote thier brands through motorsports, others are not.

For now that's about all I can offer. If you need further help later on, feel free to drop a note

Sincerely

Experience

I have been racing for 20 years, I have been the Central Florida SCCA Regional Championship points for 5 years running, and won the championship in my class 2 times. During my first start in the 60's I won many solo awards and the State Championship Drags. I serve as a senior instructor for SCCA, and have taught in Mercedes AMG events at Daytona, and Dodge Viper Days at Sebring International. I have been in the thick of the competition for all of my career. At one time or another I have driven race cars at speeds nearing 195 MPH. It's quite a ride !
