Dan...I always wondered why the racing tire manufacturers couldn't place the valvestems on the inside of the tire instead of the outside to prevent accidental damage during contact? After all, the tires never need to be inflated or deflated after they're on the car. Thanks...Robert Brown

Hi Robert.

Sorry but you are under a misconception- - -racing tires have to have air added and removed quite regularly. One of the more common adjustments you'll see in a NASCAR race is a pressure adjustment to improve the car's handling characteristics. Frequently that adjust ment is LESS than a full pound of pressure.   

It is nearly equally so for street cars, certainly every responsible driver should check, or HAVE checked, his tire pressures at monthly intervals.  This will serve to save fuel, eliminate needless tire wear, and make the car much safer to drive.

I have been racing for 20 years, I have been the Central Florida SCCA Regional Championship points for 5 years running, and won the championship in my class 2 times. During my first start in the 60's I won many solo awards and the State Championship Drags. I serve as a senior instructor for SCCA, and have taught in Mercedes AMG events at Daytona, and Dodge Viper Days at Sebring International. I have been in the thick of the competition for all of my career. At one time or another I have driven race cars at speeds nearing 195 MPH. It's quite a ride !
