Question
thanks for the advice! I have another question though, so essentially you have to be good at racing to really have a racing career right? I mean I really think I could do it though.  And if I did train in Airline mechanics in the Airforce would I be able to get about any job desired as far as auto mechanic shops?

Answer
Well- - -yes, you have to be very good at your PART of racing.  If it's driving, you have some really big challenges ahead.

If you are interested in joining a team as a mechanic or an engineer, you also must be at the top of your game, but instead of atheletic ability it depends on your background, training and personal discipline.

There are people that are nothing more than transport drivers for NASCAR teams that are still part of the team, and well respected, because they can get the rig to the race on time when others couldn't .

As far s your aircraft/airline question. Mechanical work is similar no matter what you work on. In aircraft mechanics, the discipline is very strict, and only the very best and highest quality parts are allowed.  Right down to the little wire connectors, there is a spec, and it's rigid. Plus you will learn a lot more about metal fabrication.  An aircraft mechanic should make a good car mechanic if that's what he wants to do. I think aircraft would be my career choice and keep the cars as a hobby.

Again, good luck, let me know as you progress.

Experience

I have been racing for 20 years, I have been the Central Florida SCCA Regional Championship points for 5 years running, and won the championship in my class 2 times. During my first start in the 60's I won many solo awards and the State Championship Drags. I serve as a senior instructor for SCCA, and have taught in Mercedes AMG events at Daytona, and Dodge Viper Days at Sebring International. I have been in the thick of the competition for all of my career. At one time or another I have driven race cars at speeds nearing 195 MPH. It's quite a ride !
