Question
Dear Dan,
We are modifiying a 02' subaru imprezza 2.5 for track use and are installing a new cold air intake system and were woundering if we should connect it to our stock air box w/k&n air filter, or if we should remove the air box altogether? If you think we should get rid of the oem air box, what should we put in its place? Thank you for your time, hope to hear from you soon!

Answer
Hi Lauren:

I'm not real familiar with the Subaru, but I'd start by using the OEM airbox and K&N filter, but also check and see if K&N doesn't make a performance kit for the car first.  It may include a larger more efficient air box.  Don't go without one, it won't run well at all.

Depending on what kind of racing you are doing, one of the old tricks of years ago was to run the fuel feed line through a 'cool can' filled with ice. This added a bit of snap to the engine, and it's hard to call it illegal.

I hope this is a help. and good luck with your efforts,  feel free to send a follow up question or two if I can help in any other way.

I have been racing for 20 years, I have been the Central Florida SCCA Regional Championship points for 5 years running, and won the championship in my class 2 times. During my first start in the 60's I won many solo awards and the State Championship Drags. I serve as a senior instructor for SCCA, and have taught in Mercedes AMG events at Daytona, and Dodge Viper Days at Sebring International. I have been in the thick of the competition for all of my career. At one time or another I have driven race cars at speeds nearing 195 MPH. It's quite a ride !
