Auto Racing/WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT INDY CAR RACING

Question
I am a volunteer at another allexpert site (banrkuptcy, credit issues) but I don't know beans about car racing.  I am particularly interested in the Indy type cars (I don't even know if that is the same as the Formula One cars or races).  I used to watch the Indy cars back in the 60's when I was in high school (Parnelli Jones, etc.), but I don't know much about the modern day Indy car races, even though I am intersted in knowing more (are they called open wheel racers?).   I know there is a book called NASCAR for dummies, but I haven't seen one for the Indy cars.   Can you suggest a good source to learn about this sport quickly?  Thanks for your time and attention, even if you can't help.

Answer
Dear John,
Thank you for your question. I have received similar questions (identical even) in the past and you will find the answers I have given on the website.

There are 2 Indycar series, IRL and Champ Car. Their websites, where you will of course find out a loty of information, are as follows:
http://www.indycar.com/
http://www.champcarworldseries.com/FrontPage.asp

If you have any follow-up questions, please dont hesitate to ask.

I only just received your question (All Experts is suffering at the moment from poor internal/IT management) so apologies for the delay in responding.

Expertise

I`m a big F1 fan and have been since the early 80s. I read weekly European specialist F1 press and keep on top of what`s happening in F1, such as results and testing, team politics, what drivers are saying etc. I`m especially a follower of the French Prost (formally Ligier) team and am also involved in karting and sports car racing in England.

Experience

Writing accounts of the performance of the (then)Ligier team during Grand Prix meetings. Organinsing karting competitions for 300+ drivers and of course being an Allexperts Formula One expert
